Health & Environment

Climate degradation has affected the world in an unprecedented way. COP28 moved the agenda on the interactions between different actors.

COP28 has concluded with a final consensus that lays out an ambitious response to the Global Stocktake and puts forward a plan to close the gaps to 2030. It calls on Parties to transition away from fossil fuels to reach net zero, encourages them to submit economy-wide Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), includes a new specific target to triple renewables and double energy efficiency by 2030, and builds momentum behind a new architecture for climate finance. It presented an Action Agenda for implementation, mobilized over USD85 billion in funding for climate action, and presented additional commitment and advocacy agreements.  The implementation needs to follow these innovative agreements.

Our Approach

The massive effort undertaken in the 1970’s to expel tropical diseases, in particular malaria from the northern hemisphere, was successful until now. Tropical diseases prevalent in the southern hemisphere are now being reinserted in previously diseases free northern areas. Climate change related mortality and morbidity has increased with raising temperature, and dengue transmission, pathogenic non-cholerae Vibrio, and West Nile Fever outbreaks are increasing in Europe. Migration is also increasing and economic losses across the board are prevalent.

We work with multiple stakeholders' constituencies to align with global efforts to mitigate the effects of global warming and diseases patterns, social and economic factors that affect the life course.

RESEARCH PRIORITY SETTING

Public Health Research Agendas

The goal of the Research Agenda is to support the development of evidence needed to strengthen public health guidance and actions essential for limiting the impact of pandemic, zoonotic and seasonal influenza. Its objectives are to:

  • Provide a framework reflecting public health research priorities for pandemic, zoonotic, and seasonal epidemic influenza

  • Identify specific research topics, reinforce and prioritize their importance in meeting public health needs over a medium-to-long term period

  • Maintain a focus on relatively less well addressed areas such as operational research and research with applications in under-resourced countries

  • Facilitate discussion, coordination and interaction among researchers, donors and public health professionals

  • Highlight the need and benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to address knowledge gaps in public health related to influenza and its control

Public health research is essential for the development of effective policies and planning to address health security and risks associated with mass gatherings (MGs). Crucial research topics related to MGs and their effects on global health security are discussed in this review.

The research agenda for MGs consists of a framework of five major public health research directions that address issues related to reducing the risk of public health emergencies during MGs; restricting the occurrence of non-communicable and communicable diseases; minimisation of the effect of public health events associated with MGs; optimisation of the medical services and treatment of diseases during MGs; and development and application of modern public health measures. Implementation of the proposed research topics would be expected to provide benefi ts over the medium to long term in planning for MGs.
